In southern Slovenia, you find the Dormouse house. This is a holiday house like no other: it is 230 years old and our family restored and maintained it in the original style. Like one of our guests wrote: "it is an interesting experience to wake up in the past!"
What makes this holiday house so special, is the architecture which differs from other houses in the region. The house is made from natural stone and has high arched ceilings in the spacious hallway and in the bedroom. The living room, on the other hand, has a lower, wooden ceiling which contributes to a comfortable atmosphere.
Also from the outside, the house is special: this is one of the last houses in the wide region in Slovenia, which still has a thatched roof covered with straw. When you want to go indoors, you have to open the old wooden door with a very large key.
The Dormouse house is situated in a quiet village. From the window, you can see Lake Cerknica: the largest and most important wetland area in Slovenia. This is a fantastic place to explore nature and to go birdwatching, it is also a RAMSAR site, an Important Bird Area and part of Notranjska Regional Park. The lake is further unique because it is seasonal: in summer, it is often dry.
There are many places which you can visit in the surroundings and we are happy to tell you all about them. Just think about endless forests, which are home to deer, bears, wolves and lynx (it is rare to see these animals, however, you see their tracks at many places). There are also castles and small musea and not far is mount Snežnik, the highest Slovenian mountain outside of the Alps.
From the Dormouse House, you can easily drive to many places. Some distances:
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia - one hour
Postojna & the Postojna cave - 35 minutes
Križna jama (cave) - 10 minutes (you can also hike there)
Škocjan cave - 50 minutes
Predjama castle - 50 minutes
Piran, historical city on the coast - one hour and 30 minutes
Bled lake - one hour and 40 minutes
Bohinj lake - two hours and 50 minutes
Trieste city in Italy - one hour and 10 minutes
Venice in Italy - three hours
Bovec and the Soča river - two hours and 30 minutes
But there are many other places too, which you will not find in guidebooks. We are happy to advise you where to go, just tell us what you are interested in!
Something about the house itself:
The largest room (besides a spacious hallway) is the living room, where you find a dining table, a sitting corner, an authentic tiled stove and vintage twin beds. A wooden beamed ceiling bearing the year 1791 gives this room a special atmosphere.
Besides the living room, there is a smaller bedroom, which has three single beds. One of these beds is shorter than the others and is only 1,75 cm long.
We rent out the Dormouse house as self-catering accommodation, so there is a fully equipped kitchen. in the past, dishes were prepared on an open fireplace and the ceiling is still covered with a thick layer of sooth. In Slovenia, we call this a traditional "black kitchen". However, we have modernised the kitchen and included an induction hob.
The bathroom is modest but offers all necessities: sink, shower and toilet. This is a huge improvement from the wooden shed (with a heart-shaped hole in the door) which used to be outside. Imagine going to the loo outside, on a freezing winters day ...
We installed electric heating panels in all rooms and there is WiFi as well. The thick stone walls keep the house cool in summer: air-condition is not needed here. This way, the Dormouse house combines comfort with the authentic feel of this unique old farmhouse.
